Our expectations & reasoning behind this.
Although the space in the van is good compared to later campervans of the same basic dimensions, it is still limited, so the ability to store items on the outside is very useful (especially large & awkward shaped objects). To that end, fitting twin swing-out arms on the back seems a really useful option, not just for spare wheels but for a multitude of other storage options.
